Broaden your Perspective

Blind men & elephant

Sometimes, we need to broaden our perspective. Get more of the facts, in order to get the bigger picture.

If you got a message that your home team did not beat the visiting team, you might assume your team lost. But maybe the game was rained out, and nobody won. Or, maybe the visitors did not have enough players to field a team; your team didn’t beat them, but won by default. Or, the teams played to a tie.

To know what actually happened, you just need a little more information.

The analogy of the six blind men and the elephant, illustrates not having all the info.

They all agreed to what the animal smelled like and sounded like, but they had to use their sense of touch to describe what the animal “looked” like.

The first man wandered up toward the animal and ran into its tusk. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a spear.

The second man wandered up toward the animal and encountered its trunk. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a snake.

The third man wandered up toward the animal and ran into its side. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a wall.

The fourth man wandered up toward the animal and encounterd its tail. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a rope.

The fifth man wandered up toward the animal and ran into its leg. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a tree.

The sixth man wandered up toward the animal and encountered its ear. He withdrew claiming the elephant is like a fan.

None of them was correct, yet none of them was ready to yield their position. They each had physical evidence to confirm their claim. Their combined perspectives were much accurate.
